By Dr. Akram Habeeb
Exactly one year ago, the Gazans who were then seared by the bright flames of phosphorous bombs used by what is ironically called the Israel Defense Forces, clung much hope on the new president of USA; they believed that he would promptly intervene and press Israel to stop its crimes against the long term displaced nation, they thought that he would be just and fair as he promised, but unfortunately, he practically did nothing; the Israeli crimes are still perpetrated against the Palestinians, the worst of which is the siege imposed on Gaza as a retaliation to the results of the most democratic and clean elections of 2006.
Those elections were hailed by ex USA president, Jimmy Carter, the real democrat who lived up his promises when he was a president.
As an Americanist in Gaza, a professor who loves America and the wonderful American People, the one who teaches American Literature and American Culture, I was disappointed with the performance of the new American Administration in its first year.
This disappointment has been concretized in a message sent to Obama by the Palestinian children; those who do not know why they are orphaned, why they are jailed in a big concentration Camp called Gaza and finally why they are killed by suffocating siege imposed by those the most unethical forces of oppression and suppression in the world.
Those who unfortunately use the most sophisticated American weapons. My message is a lyric written on behalf of Gaza kids, yet sung by them. My burgeoning lyric is entitled "Gaza kids are calling for Obama".
It is exactly what Gaza kids want obama to do that will help improve the image of America in the Muslim world, not the highly rhetorical speech delivered in Cairo by President Obama, the Noble Prize winner!
I think Obama should quickly work out a real peace plan which would meet the legitimate demands of the Palestinians of having their independent state next to the state of Israel. The Palestinians are expecting Obama to help waive the Israeli and American veto on the Palestinian reconciliation, because without Palestinian unity, there will be no real peace.
President Obama and his aides should stop thinking of the Middle East crisis as a security problem but rather political crises which she should be solved immediately on just basis. It is then; all the Muslims in the World will sing Viva American, and Vive, Vive, Obamaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
To see and listen to the song,
Dr. Habeeb is an Assistant Professor of American Literature at the Islamic University of Gaza.
